Summary

This project covers Mati’s ERW deployments in Seoni, India, where Mati is applying basalt powder sourced from the Deccan Traps. During growing seasons, rice paddies experience extremely high water fluxes, which helps to expedite basalt dissolution and thus, CO2 drawdown. Mati works exclusively with smallholder farmers. Mati’s ERW deployments are agricultural interventions that act to improve productivity of cropland at smallholder farms. Mati’s ERW deployments provide outsized value to smallholder farmers who often cannot afford agricultural inputs such as fertilizer or pH balancing agents.

How carbon is being removed

Enhanced Weathering (EW) accelerates the Earth's natural chemical weathering process to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In chemical weathering, carbon dioxide dissolved in rainwater reacts with minerals in rocks, partly dissolving them and producing stable bicarbonate ions. These bicarbonate ions are transported by rivers to the ocean, where they are safely stored for thousands of years. EW is typically carried out by spreading crushed reactive rocks or minerals on croplands.
